Book Description
In a groundbreaking, comprehensive history of the Army of Northern Virginia's retreat from Gettysburg in July 1863, Kent Masterson Brown draws on previously untapped sources to chronicle the massive effort of General Robert E. Lee and his command as they sought to move people, equipment, and scavenged supplies through hostile territory and plan the army's next moves. Brown reveals that even though the battle of Gettysburg was a defeat for the Army of Northern Virginia, Lee's successful retreat maintained the balance of power in the eastern theater and left his army with enough forage, stores, and fresh meat to ensure its continued existence as an effective force.

Book Description
For almost five hundred years, the little book The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola has been an important source for Christian prayer-life. However, many Church ministers (priests, deacons, religious, and laypersons) do not have the time to make the full thirty-day Ignatian retreat with a spiritual director. This helpful resource seeks to lead a retreatant prayerfully into the heart of an Ignatian retreat by using contemplations and themes from the Spiritual Exercises as well as other meditations on the life of Jesus-but within an eight-day time frame. With a particular focus on ministry, both ordained and nonordained, the short chapters present mysteries from the life of Jesus and considerations that correspond to the dynamics of the Exercises. They represent a preparation for prayer, not to instruct but to move the imagination and hopefully the heart. An appendix offers additional scriptural texts. An 8 Day Ignatian Retreat for Priests, Religious, Deacons, and Lay Ministers enables busy and hardworking Church ministers to apply the Ignatian insights to their own interior life, which will result in rejuvenation and growth in their pastoral ministry.

Book Description
On 23 August 1914 it was only the two divisions of General Smith-Dorrien's II Corps that were directly engaged with the German First Army along the line of the Mons-Conde Canal. As the British Expeditionary Force withdrew from Mons and bivouacked around Bavay on 25 August, Sir John French and his GHQ advisors _ unsure of the condition of the routes through the Fort de Mormal - ordered the British Expeditionary Force to continue their retirement the next day and to avoid the 35 square miles of forest roads. Consequently II Corps used the roads to the west of the Fort de Mormal and Sir Douglas Haig's I Corps those to the east _ with the intention that the four divisions should meet again at Le Cateau. It was an intention that was ambushed by circumstance as I Corps encountered units of the German 7th Division at Landrecies on 25/26 August. Unsure of the weight of the German attack at Landrecies, Douglas Haig hurriedly left for Grand Fayt and ordered his two divisions to immediately begin their retirement along a route that would take them west of Le Cateau. It was this decision that kept the by now five divisions of the BEF apart until 1 September and is the subject of this book. I Corps was now coming under attack from the German Second Army and the resulting rearguard actions that Haig's men were involved in are covered in this volume:

Book Description
A dedicated Jesuit priest struggles to understand the decline of the Society of Jesus and turns to former students for guidance in this intriguing novel. Retreat from Manresa: a Jesuit Story At the heart of the modern decline in the influence of the Catholic Church is the story of the decline in numbers and influence of the Jesuits. This book is a fictional account of the internal conditions that have led to the decline of this once great religious order. The history of the Society of Jesus, Jesuits, begins at Manresa in Spain where the founder, St Ignatius Loyola, prayed and wrote the Spiritual Exercises which became the core of the orders unique spirituality and which every Jesuit was required to make twice in his long thirteen-year formation, once at the beginning in the novitiate and at the end in tertianship. Once known as the black popes with a special vow of obedience to the pontiff, the Jesuits have since fallen into the ranks of the unofficial opposition to the recent popes, especially Pope John Paul II. Through a fictional account of the lives of four principal characters, Retreat from Manresa tells the story of this transformation of the Jesuit order. Unlike several other such novels, however, this one is not written out of a well of bitterness; it is, on the contrary, written from a large reservoir of affection. An affection, however, tinged with a deep sadness.
