Book Description
“The Outer Darkness” is the author's magnum opus that ties together his arguments for unconditional security and conditional rewards. The biblical phrase “outer darkness” occurs three times in the Gospel of Matthew. This study examines this biblical phrase within its eschatological, soteriological, misthological, biblical, historical, and intertestamental contexts. Critical interactions with Arminian and Calvinistic interpretations and interpreters are met with an alternative proposal that affirms unconditional security. Generally, Arminian and Calvinistic interpreters are agreed that security is conditioned upon perseverance. For the Arminian, you must persevere in order to be elected to go to heaven. If you fail to persevere, you will lose your salvation. This Arminian perspective might be called the forfeitist position. The typical acronym employed for this perspective is PEARS. For the Calvinists, if you are elected, you must persevere in order to go to heaven. If you fail to persevere, this will prove that you were never elected. This perspective could be termed the proveitist position. The way you live reputedly proves whether you are saved. Ultimately, your final salvation is conditioned upon your proving you are saved by the way you live. You must persevere till the end to be saved in the end. The well-known acronym for this perspective is TULIP. The mediating position offered by Cauley, in which unconditional security is defended, has its roots in a historical movement known as the Marrow Controversy. Accordingly, the name chosen by Cauley to represent his approach is Marrowism, which is used for a contemporary expression of the Free Grace Movement. Within the Marrowistic hermeneutic, perseverance is regarded as a means necessary for rewards within heaven rather than for entrance into heaven. The acronym for this perspective is GRAPE. Misthos is the Greek word for “rewards” from which the term misthological is derived. Therefore, from the Marrowistic perspective, perseverance would be considered a misthological issue. The outer darkness is likewise regarded as a misthological (that is, rewards) issue within Cauley’s treatment. Objections to unconditional security in general and to a misthological interpretation of the outer darkness in particular are dealt with in-depth in this two volume work. Volume one spans the first 25 chapters and contains the tables of contents and illustrations (as well as abbreviations and symbols) for the entire two-volume set.

Book Description
Volume two of “The Outer Darkness” contains the remaining 6 chapters, plus 19 appendixes, and houses the endnotes and indexes for the entire two-volume set. Indexes are provided for author, subject, extrabiblical, biblical, Greek, Hebrew, and Slavonic citations. To help the visually oriented reader, over 375 illustrations are provided within the set, covering a wide range of topics and a wide assortment of illustrative techniques, such as: pictures, graphs, flow charts, and syllogisms. Surprisingly, perhaps, not all defenders of unconditional security within the Free Grace camp would regard the outer darkness as a misthological issue. They would see it as being a strictly soteriological issue (thus pertaining to salvation from eternal damnation). Their arguments have been addressed as well. Some writers within the Free Grace community interpret some of the passages regarding the outer darkness soterically but acknowledge that at least one passage is mistholic (and thus applicable to believers as a reward issue). Although Cauley prefers an exclusively misthological view of the outer darkness, he does entertain the plausibility of such a soteric-mistholic duality under the auspices of his Principle of Correlativity. This principle allows him to integrate divergent points of views held by various kingdom writers regarding the outer darkness. For example, what impact does one’s understanding of the outer darkness have within kingdom circles upon one's interpretation of the Bride of Christ, Gehenna, and the Second Death? Presently, kingdom writers are disagreed among themselves as to the exact nature of these potentially intertwined issues. Does a misthological understanding of the outer darkness necessarily infer a misthological understanding of the Bride? In other words, will all believers compose the Bride even if some of them are cast into the outer darkness? Does being cast into the outer darkness necessarily entail being cast outside of the kingdom into Gehenna for a thousand years before being allowed into the eternal kingdom? Might a believer be hurt by the Second Death? For many years, Joseph Dillow’s book, The Reign of the Servant Kings, was the most comprehensive treatment of such matters within the Free Grace community. He took what might he termed a classical view of the above issues. More recently, Dillow has performed a synthesis between the classical view and the more extreme views of Gehenna, into what The Outer Darkness refers to as a Preteristic Gehenna-Bema. However, this neo-Dillowian perspective might be further synthesized with the classical Dillowian perspective into what The Outer Darkness refers to as a Neoclassical Position. Therefore, The Outer Darkness not only interacts with both the classical Dillowian and neo-Dillowian perspectives but also provides the foundation for what comes next.

Book Description
In the minds of some, universal salvation is a heretical idea that was imported into Christianity from pagan philosophies by Origen (c.185-253/4). Ilaria Ramelli argues that this picture is completely mistaken. She maintains that Christian theologians were the first people to proclaim that all will be saved and that their reasons for doing so were rooted in their faith in Christ. She demonstrates that, in fact, the idea of the final restoration of all creation (apokatastasis) was grounded upon the teachings of the Bible and the church's beliefs about Jesus' total triumph over sin, death, and evil through his incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. Ramelli traces the Christian roots of Origen's teaching on apokatastasis. She argues that he was drawing on texts from Scripture and from various Christians who preceded him, theologians such as Bardaisan, Irenaeus, and Clement. She outlines Origen's often-misunderstood theology in some detail and then follows the legacy of his Christian universalism through the centuries that followed. We are treated to explorations of Origenian universal salvation in a host of Christian disciples, including Athanasius, Didymus the Blind, the Cappadocian fathers, Evagrius, Maximus the Confessor, John Scotus Eriugena, and Julian of Norwich.
