Book Description
Against the backdrop of the concept of love generated in the 18th century by the Romantic movement as an ongoing force in contemporary society, argues that such notions did not exist during classical Greek and Roman periods. Also severely critiques popular culture as using Romantic love to perpetuate the oppression of the new poor by commodifying affectionate sentimentality. Borrowing the master and slave vocabularies from Nietzsche, finds that the prevailing sexual code for the rich is pornography and libertarianism reminiscent of decadent Rome, while the poor live by a version of love that turns them into a colonized mass. Book Description
A neglected area of publishing in the visual arts is that of women's perceptions and strategies for sustaining their careers as artists. This book reports on research which investigated the formative life experiences of nine women and how they perceived their positions as students, artists, art teachers and family members in relation to the discourses dominant in their lives. The study aimed to identify new discursive practices undertaken by the women to contest their positioning. It used feminist poststructuralist methodology that acknowledged the notion of constitution and positioning of the subject in discourse. This innovative methodology is valuable for researchers in a range of disciplines not only in studying careers of women but also other marginalised groups. Because of the reliance on the women's voices, the text contributes rich pictures of women's lives and their attempts to negotiate their careers in workplaces they described as battle grounds. Consequently the text has a wider appeal to readers interested in women's careers and art practice. experiences of the women who were able to challenge and restructure constraining discourses. They utilised a range of strategies to negotiate obstacles and, based on the women's experiences and the literature, the author is then able to propose further possible strategies.

Book Description
Analysing political discourse in the British press during a time of crisis and austerity, this book examines how the concept of the welfare state has been constructed between 2008 and 2015. At a time when the financial crisis and government policies have put the welfare state under increased pressure, a corpus from four British newspapers from across the political spectrum - the Guardian, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, and Daily Telegraph - is brought together to investigate the political debate on its evaluation and the ambiguity about its exact definition. Combining two theoretical approaches, Malgorzata Paprota outlines the figurative models and scenarios relevant to this element of the political system. The discourse-historical approach to discourse analysis is used to establish what the welfare state is, tracing the boundaries of the concept and which elements of political reality are explicitly associated with it. Conceptual metaphor theory is then used to explore the figurative conceptualisations of the welfare state. Together, this book shows the discursive construction, and shifting boundaries and metaphors, of the welfare state by the British press and its use in current political debates.
