Book Description
In this stunning memoir of life after loss, the open-water swimming legend and bestselling author tells of facing the one challenge that no amount of training could prepare her for. A celebrated athlete who set swimming records around the world, Lynne Cox achieved astonishing feats of strength and endurance. She was the first to swim the frigid waters of the Bering Strait, the Strait of Magellan, and the coast of Antarctica, and she was the fastest to swim the English Channel. But it is a different kind of struggle that pushes her to the brink. In a short period of time, Lynne loses her father, and then her mother, and then Cody, her beloved Labrador retriever. Soon after, Lynne herself is diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition that leaves her unable to swim and barely able to walk. But against all odds, and with the support of her friends and family, Lynne begins the slow pull toward recovery, reaching always for the open waters that give her the freedom and mastery that mean everything to her. What follows is a beautifully poignant meditation on loss and an exhilarating celebration of life as, to Lynne’s surprise, she begins to find, within the unfamiliar space of vulnerability, the greatest treasures—like falling in love.

Book Description
When the plans and dreams of a young swimmer are shattered by the United States’ boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, God opens the door of new opportunities. For Paul Asmuth, then 22, it is the end of an unfulfilled dream, and the beginning of another journey, this one remarkable and life-changing. Plunging into the astounding, grueling, hypnotic, and often oddly beautiful world of international marathon swimming competitions, Asmuth experiences both triumph and tragedy, and, in a process as long and punishing as the marathon swims themselves, slowly discovers the best of himself. If you care for resumes, Asmuth is one of the most successful marathon swimmers in history. In the sapphire seas off Italy, in the frigid lakes of Quebec, Canada, in the marshy back bays of New Jersey, in the questionable waters ringing Manhattan, swimming distances from twenty to forty miles, Asmuth emerged victorious, often to thunderous acclaim. After multiple victories at the twenty-six-mile swim across Quebec’s Lac Memphremagog, up to 20,000 spectators would cheer and call him “le roi” (the king) of their lake. But true victory is not a matter of accolades or medals, and the stories that make a real difference unfold behind the headlines. Overcoming self-doubt, nausea, hypothermia, cruel tides and dark, watery shadows both real and imagined, Asmuth calls upon passion, iron-clad resolve, and steadfast faith to emerge a changed man, attaining success in its truest and most honest form. This success does not end when Asmuth retires from competing. Coming full circle, when he hangs up his swim suit, Paul takes the knowledge, lessons and examples he learned from his own experiences and some of the world’s greatest coaches, and turns to helping others with their swimming dreams. His prayers to give back are answered by coaching opportunities at multiple World Championships and two Olympic Games, where marathon swimming is now a contested event. But this is not just the tale of a swimmer. Like any great story, Paul’s transcends sport. By listening to the voice of faith and not of fear, new dreams are born, and God’s plans are revealed.

Book Description
"I really do not know how to greet this man, so I simply extend my hand. He takes it and then pulls me into an embrace that lasts several long moments. As my head rests against his jacket I find myself weeping, and through that sound, I hear the steady beat of Maya's heart in his chest," writes Eleanor Vincent in this moving story about love, loss, and renewal. Maya, Eleanor's elder daughter, was a high-spirited and gifted young woman. At age nineteen, she mounted a horse bareback on a dare, and in a crushing cantilever fall, was left in a coma from which she never recovered. Eleanor's life was turned upside down as she struggled to make the painful decision about Maya's fate. Ultimately, Eleanor chose to donate Maya's organs. Maya's heart was given to a man with a young family who needed a new heart to live. As time went by, Eleanor contacted and struck up a friendship with the heart recipient family. Swimming with Maya is about the unique and complicated relationship between mothers and daughters. It also explores how through organ donation, a relationship can continue to exist beyond the grave, changing many lives. In vivid language, Eleanor Vincent illuminates how courage, radical generosity, and letting go can heal a devastating loss. Book jacket.

Book Description
"My horse is outside waiting for me! I wonder how she can still be alive after all these years. But she is there, and she must be hungry, so I grab a carrot (with the greens still attached) and head toward the pasture. I call her name in the old familiar way, and she whinnies in recognition. When I find her, she chomps down the carrot and greens." * "I'm actually breathing underwater! The cool water rushes by, keeping me safe as I glide along. I think about how strange it is to be able to breathe normally while swimming underwater. I'm probably the only person on earth who can do this." * I had these dreams for decades. In both cases, there was eventually a new element that acknowledged the existence of the previous versions . . . "before it was just a dream, but now it's really happening." Some time ago I started an essay about my underwater dream. I quickly realized that the dream was tied to my lifelong debilitating shyness: staying underwater indefinitely was a handy way to escape social interaction. It's a great dream, but I didn't want to write about the humiliation of being unable to make small talk or, for that matter, most kinds of talk. I preferred to forget all the times I put my foot in my mouth - besides, it's embarrassing to admit to feeling so embarrassed. An essay about my horse was also put aside because I assumed I wouldn't remember enough details from forty years ago. I often thought about my beautiful horse with a star on her forehead, and the dreams I had about "her," but it didn't go much further than that. Then I saw the movie "Secretariat" and was inspired once again to write about the horse I had when I was a teenager. I wondered if my two recurring dreams might be connected . . . if I were able to breathe underwater, I could ride the wave longer and put off facing the rest of the world . . . and if only my horse were still with me, I wouldn't feel so alone when I did have to face it all. Were they two sides of the same coin? I decided they were. I was surprised to discover that the more I wrote about the past, the more I remembered, until finally the whole story unfolded. Looking back at the horse factor in my childhood from a grownup perspective - especially inside the framework of the dreams - made me begin to understand myself. It was revealing as well to find out that there's one detail my psyche is keeping beyond my reach. This is the story of a girl who felt less alone because of her friendship with a horse.
