Book Description
What has been called "Africa's First World War" is a culmination of a series of conflicts that have characterised the decay, decomposition, and crisis of the European economic and political order that was imposed by Europe on Africa at the Berlin Conference of 1884-85 that divided up Africa among the strong European powers. These conflicts which have been afflicted and continue to afflict the Great Lakes Region (GLR) is a continuation of the process of dispossession and disempowerment of the people of this region by European mineral interests which started with the European Great Scramble for Africa. It is a crisis of the African post-colonial states, which in their decay and decomposition are creating new conditions for the recolonisation of the continent, except that this time the players are both local "new breed" African leaders and their global dominant economic interests, which this time include Mafia forces. The crisis is therefore that of both the former metropolitan and new imperialist interests, and that of the African project of modernisation based on European definitions.

Book Description
This essential introduction provides an invaluable study aid to students. The book deals with the policies and the issues that brought Europe to war in 1914. The position of each of the great powers within the international framework is concisely explained. The problems confronting them are also carefully analysed, as is the influence of political and economic structures on the decision-making process. Professor Martel shows how and why the confrontational alliance system came into being and considers the impact upon it of the series of crisis that brought the major powers close to conflict in the opening years of the twentieth century. He outlines the terms and obligations that these alliances entailed and discusses the extent to which they were responsible for the outbreak of war.

Book Description
In spite of the promises made by the Allied powers in the 1920 Treaty of Sèvres, the Kurds have so far failed to secure their national independence - a goal achieved by the Arabs and other nations in the region. The author shows how, before and during the First World War, the political manoeuvring of the Allied powers, particularly Britain, concentrated on securing easy access to the region's oilfields and thus ignored the rights of the Kurds. The role and involvement of Germany and Russia are also discussed in detail. Of major importance are the chapters examining the role of the Kurds in the Armenian massacres. In his dispassionate analysis of this sensitive issue, the author sheds new lights on the involvement of the Kurds in the tragedy of the Armenian people under Ottoman rule.
